We have great news: our Maastricht Council assistant Economy & Culture, Romy Frijters, is number six on Volt's draft candidate list for the upcoming Lower House election. Romy has been politically active for some time and has been Council assistant in the Maastricht City Council since March 2022. Here she represents Volt in the domain of Economy and Culture. In this role, as a resident of Maastricht and Limburg, and as the daughter of a border entrepreneur, Romy knows better than anyone how Hague policy can clash with the interests of our border region. "This has to change: especially when you look at the decreased trust in the government in our region. With my candidacy, I want to build a bridge between the region and political The Hague. I want to bring the interests of our European region more to the fore, even more than we can do now in the Maastricht council. Our regional interests often diverge from what is seen as national interest." The draft election program elaborates a number of ambitions for the border regions, partly through the efforts of the Maastricht Council group. "We immediately put forward a number of points that we felt should not be missing from the Volt election program. Think, for example, of tackling cross-border crime, investments in Euroregional public transport and the recognition of diplomas in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany." Yet for Romy, this is only a first step: "Naming the issues is not enough: it is now time that we also address them. With a new list and a new Council group , Volt will have to really start making European values visible in the border region, where Europe is most tangible." 💚🌳We are swapping old politics for new, Maastricht needs a Green Deal! Ten years ago, the Environmental Zone could have made the difference in reducing diesel cars. With the declining number of diesel cars, it would now be mere symbol politics, recent research suggests. Let's invest the five million, which was intended for the environmental zone, in effective measures for better air quality. Volt calls for a genuine Maastricht Green Deal. @jules.ortjens proposed the idea in the City Council. The Limburger (newspaper) is enthusiastic. Now it's up to the Executive Board! The motion to move the money passed. Now we have to work towards proper distribution of this money. What are our next steps and do you want to contribute ideas on what should be in the deal? We will ask written questions on effectiveness A public meeting will be held on the subject (everyone is welcome) In October we will concretely discuss what the content of this Green Deal should be So if you have concrete steps for a more green Maastricht, know where to find us! 🤝🌍💪🏼Mayor Penn-te Strake's statement that criminals would rule Limburg caused controversy last week. Our party leader @jules.ortjens spoke about it with @rtvmaastricht . When it comes to criminality, it is more important than ever in a border area to make it possible for the different countries involved to cooperate in an efficient way. So... Liège and Aachen, let's work together on this and call our new mayor as of July 1.

Today MP @marieke_koekkoek of @voltnederland visited the Council group of Volt Maastricht and together we went to the MBO Vista municipal executives. Vista municipal executives is committed to stronger internationalization within MBO, so that the working Maastricht people of tomorrow are ready for a cross-border European future. So we went into online conversation with students who are on internships in Finland, talked to a German teacher about the exchanges with the Berufsschule in Aachen and talked to the Internationalization & Euregionalization department about the challenges for MBO students in our border region! Incredibly inspiring to see so many people preparing our region for a European economy! ENGLISH Today, our Volt Nederland MP, Marieke Koekkoek, visited the Volt Maastricht council group. All across Europe energy prices are skyrocketing and the most vulnerable individuals and families are experiencing the consequences. The Maastricht municipality doesn't want to sit idle while people struggle to pay their bills. That's why the council, partly thanks to our efforts, secured an emergency fund to help those in need. But of course, there are some complicated requirements that you'll have to meet in order to receive energy compensation. We created this flowchart to help you navigate the different possibilities to be eligible for any kind of energy allowance. Find out if you're entitled to compensation by following the flowchart above. If you have any questions or need help applying for the energy compensation, tap the link in our bio or visit our Volt Booth at Brusselsestraat 53B. We're open every Friday from 10.00 to 18.00.
