🌈🌈 English below: Maastricht wants to further promote the acceptance of lhbtqia+ people with a 'rainbow alliance' and an activity agenda. Sixty thousand euros is available for the next three years. In recent years, several new parties have emerged that also represent the interests of this target group, observes Municipal executive Anita Bastiaans (Inclusion, Volt). "Think of Maastricht Pride and UM Pride. In a broad alliance, in which youth and welfare clubs are also represented, all groups can feel represented." ... A second ambition is to establish a "rainbow agenda. This could include social and cultural, as well as "visibility activities," focusing on themes such as safety and awareness. We have great news: our Maastricht Council assistant Economy & Culture, Romy Frijters, is number six on Volt's draft candidate list for the upcoming Lower House election. Romy has been politically active for some time and has been Council assistant in the Maastricht City Council since March 2022. Here she represents Volt in the domain of Economy and Culture. In this role, as a resident of Maastricht and Limburg, and as the daughter of a border entrepreneur, Romy knows better than anyone how Hague policy can clash with the interests of our border region. "This has to change: especially when you look at the decreased trust in the government in our region. With my candidacy, I want to build a bridge between the region and political The Hague. I want to bring the interests of our European region more to the fore, even more than we can do now in the Maastricht council. Our regional interests often diverge from what is seen as national interest." The draft election program elaborates a number of ambitions for the border regions, partly through the efforts of the Maastricht Council group. "We immediately put forward a number of points that we felt should not be missing from the Volt election program. Think, for example, of tackling cross-border crime, investments in Euroregional public transport and the recognition of diplomas in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany." Yet for Romy, this is only a first step: "Naming the issues is not enough: it is now time that we also address them. With a new list and a new Council group , Volt will have to really start making European values visible in the border region, where Europe is most tangible." 🎓 An English-language university that does not meet Limburg's needs is just a diploma factory for foreign countries 💨 As a pragmatic party, we want to add nuance to the internationalization debate. 🇪🇺 However, "Dutchizing" the university denies the international character of Limburg. 👥 This is why Volt Maastricht Council group advocates a regional vision with concrete solutions that ensures internationals become the Limburgers of tomorrow. Unfortunately, it has become a bureaucratic jungle for the home-based border worker. While Minister Marnix van Rij consults with officials from Belgium and Germany on adapting bilateral treaties, we, with fellow Volters from The Hague increase the pressure even more by submitting a motion. And. this was passed by the second chamber with a large majority. 🤝 Politicians in The Hague are looking out for the border region and implementing concrete actions. We had an exciting @voltnederland 🇳🇱 Conference held in Zwolle! We had an insightful discussion on citizen participation with our very own Volt Maastricht Executive Counciller of European Affairs, @anitabastiaans , Frankfurt's Executive, @eileen_o.sullivan , and Dutch Member of Parliament, @laurens.dassen . Moreover, we elected new members to the board of Volt Nederland, and discussed all the preparations for the upcoming European Parliament elections for Volt Europe. We also had the opportunity to meet and interact with fellow Volt members from various European countries. Together with the Greens, we submitted questions, about the distribution of anti-discrimination budgets, as well as the rise of far-right movements across the province. 💻 The first step towards a more cross-border worker-friendly policy has been made! As a truly pan-European party, we are more than happy to announce that after an effective lobby in the Hague, the rules regarding social insurance for cross-border workers are changing. European member states will provide better regulations regarding working from home. We want to emphasize that this is just the beginning, because tax-related issues remain disadvantageous for cross-border workers. At Volt Maastricht, we see it as our responsibility to be the voice of cross-border workers in the region. We will continue this lobby and keep the conversation alive. The first step towards a more border worker friendly policy has been taken! As a pan-European party, we are happy to say that after effective lobbying towards The Hague, things will change for cross-border workers. European member states are working on better regulations around working from home for frontier workers. ⚡Breaking news!⚡ Maastricht has secured at least €1.6 million in government funding for students struggling to pay their energy bills, and we are thrilled to announce that Volt managed to make sure this will become available for students of all nationalities (not just Dutch!). Still, the financial picture is far from ideal as the city will still not be able to compensate all students. For students who aren't covered, the local government is still working on other available funding. So, how to find out whether you are eligible for funding? We can imagine that the current situation feels like a bureaucratic mess to you. Therefore, starting January 20th, Volt will be available each Friday between 10.00 - 18.00. You can find us in our Volt Booth at the Brusselsestraat 53B. Here we will answer any questions you may have and see how we can help you get compensation. Council member Mart visiting Volt @voltbelgium Our council member Mart visited our colleagues in Antwerp yesterday and gave a presentation on a classic Volt theme; the citizens' council. A means to get more participation in democracy. We are proud to say that we will soon organize a citizens' council here in Maastricht! Furthermore, Mart is also in Antwerp to help our neighbors advance with their elections that will take place in 16 months. This is what European cooperation looks like in practice. The Dutch national government is being pressured by the University of Amsterdam to limit the flow of incoming international students. This nationalism-in-disguise is problematic for a border-region city like Maastricht, which is, for a large part, dependent on cross-border talent. This is hostile policy making that isn't in line with the spirit of the EU and we will stand against it. (Dutch) The University of Amsterdam is lobbying the Dutch government to limit the influx of international students to the Netherlands. This creeping nationalism is problematic for the border region that depends on young talent living on the other side of the border. The environmental zone: no-brainer or non-starter? For some time now, the environmental zone has been a hot topic in the City Council. The term often coincides with the zero-emission zone and the car-free city center and reminds us Council assistant Danny Janssen of the City Council and its local parties; the same ultimate goal, but each a different approach. Today marks the 29th anniversary of the Maastricht Treaty. The treaty established the concept of European citizenship, provided the basis for the eventual introduction of a common currency and committed EU members to cooperation in foreign and security policy. In short, the Maastricht Treaty is the foundation of the European Union. We are proud of Maastricht's European heritage but are also aware of the many cross-border challenges facing the municipality. The EU and cooperation with municipalities on the other side of the border will be needed to solve these problems. Therefore, we will continue our efforts to institutionalising Europe in Maastricht.
